Remembrances Henry Wessells (add yours by emailing alfamail@comcast.net) |
From Bill Kelly, fellow Alfa 1900CSS owner, Tampa FL;Sorry to hear about Henry. He was a very devoted and valuable member of
the Alfa family. I hope his last request was to be buried in his favorite Alfa. And, his request is honored. Bill K |

I only met Henry once. I was on business in Philadelphia and Peter suggested I contact him while there. I drove out to his lovely old farmhouse home and was shown what cars he had there at the time. I remember his study packed full of books and other Alfa memorabilia. We went to a local shop where his silver 1900C SS was being restored and I was impressed at the standard that was being achieved. When he told me that he had worked for the Budd Corporation, I assumed he meant the famous American beer company. A short time afterwards I realised he had worked for a company that developed large hydraulic presses for vehicle body panels. He sold this equipment to many European car manufacturers including Alfa Romeo when I assume his love for these cars started. We had lunch at his wonderful old Country Club where, to my surprise, was told they had a cricket team ( why have we never played a test match with the US? it doesn't take much to beat us). After lunch I said good bye and we never met again.
My brief meeting with this great man has always stuck in my memory, it's a shame I never had the opportunity of meeting him again.

From Carlo Lavan, historian, Aachen, Germany
Very sad news indeed. My thoughts and are with him and his family. Please offer my condolences to them. For the Alfa community around the planet, his name was famous as he owned such beautiful cars. And he loved to share his knowledge and experiences with other lovers of the make. Especially historians appreciated to learn about his opinion in certain details in the history of Alfa Romeo. His statements were always reliable and precise and a great source for all us. By his support and research many mysteries in the Alfa history could be put aside, that's one of many reasons why he is, even here in Europe, so wellknown as an absolute expert with a rich treasure of experiences that he was willing to share and that was so helpful for many of us. No doubt that his name will never be forgotten in the world of Alfa lovers. Sadly Carlo Laven Aachen, Germany |

Very sad about Henry. I didn't know the man, but he was held in such high esteem by the Alfa community in general. and especially the 1900 folks, that I feel a loss in the knowledge that I never will meet Henry. I did meet one his cars, though (the Peron 6C3000CM, as a Boano coupe), back in the early Seventies. |

Meadow Brook August 2008
B.A.T. 11 appearance at the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance attracted an enormous amount of interest by spectators as well as the Detroit press. This is quite remarkable considering it is a very basic concept car without a mechanical platform. In fact the vehicle drew People's Choice, even more remarkable, but because it was not a running car the award could not be made. |
